Ah, The Old Angel: a genuine rough diamond lurking slap-bang in the middle of Hockley’s unstoppable glare of leather and chrome-furnished trendy bars. The Angel is a traditional, down-to-earth pub with reasonably priced, very decent pub food, lower than average drinks prices, a friendly atmosphere and a very diverse clientele. Essentially the pub is split into four rooms: a quiet(ish) bar with no music; a second, rowdy, rock jukebox-dominated bar full of punks; a pool room; and the upstairs gig venue, which holds 110 sweaty punters. Gigs are regular, cheap, and generally of the underground punk and metal variety but with the odd weird and interesting alternative act as well. Last time I was there I saw Trencher (was it Trencher?) perform on a pool table.

The toilets are bloody horrendous, mind
